Wooden Laptop Stand Buying Guide: What Really Matters
Monday morning, kitchen table. The laptop lies flat, your head tilts forward, and two hours in your neck lets you know about it. You search for "wooden laptop stand" and the first results are lists of fifteen near-identical products between €12 and €40. They all look fine. None of the write-ups tells you which one will still be on your desk in a year.
This guide takes a different approach. We explain what actually matters in a wooden laptop stand, where wood beats aluminium and where it does not, and who should not buy our own stand. There is no product that suits everyone.
Why wood at all?
Aluminium stands are light, dissipate heat well and cost little. If that is all you need, you do not need this article. People choose wood for three other reasons: on a desk it reads as furniture rather than accessory, it is warm and grippy under the hand, and a well-made wooden piece ages better than a bent sheet of metal with rubber feet.
The catch: on Amazon, "wood" is often bamboo veneer glued onto MDF in a factory with no name. That is not automatically bad, but it explains why one stand costs €19 and another €245. The difference is not in the photo; it is in the material, the build and the origin.
The three types of wooden laptop stand
1. The fixed wedge
A block or slope at a fixed angle, usually 15 to 20 degrees. Cheap, stable, no moving parts. Downside: no height adjustment, and it does nothing except lift the laptop. For a fixed home desk with an external keyboard, that is perfectly fine.
2. The folding travel stand
Two thin wooden plates on a hinge, often under 500 grams. Fits in any bag. Downside: it wobbles under heavier laptops, and the hinges are the weak point. If you commute daily and only want to raise the screen, this is the right category.
3. The organiser with a built-in stand
A wooden body that lifts the laptop and also holds charger, notebook, pens and cables. Heavier and more expensive, but it replaces three things at once. What to check before you buy
- Material and veneer. Ask what the wood is. Oak veneer on a light, fast-growing core is stable and stays portable. Be careful with "bamboo" and no further detail: it is usually pressed material with a lot of glue.
- Laptop size. Measure your laptop, not the manufacturer's inch figure. A 16-inch MacBook Pro does not fit every "15-inch" stand. The Gustav Original takes laptops up to 15 inches; the Original XL up to 17 inches.
- Height and angle. The screen should reach eye level when you use an external keyboard. Without one, every stand is a compromise, whatever the material.
- Weight. Under 500 grams is travel-friendly; over a kilo is a piece of furniture you move between office and home but do not carry in a rucksack every day. The Gustav Original weighs 1.2 kg, the XL 1.5 kg.
- Stability. Felt or rubber underneath protects the desk. A stand without a base will scratch lacquered surfaces.
- Origin and warranty. "Designed in Germany" does not mean "made in Europe". Ask where it is produced and how long the warranty runs.

Frequently asked questions
Does a wooden laptop stand cool worse than aluminium?
Slightly. Aluminium conducts heat away; wood does not. In practice what matters is that the laptop sits clear underneath so air can circulate, which an open wooden stand allows. Only closed wooden boxes with the laptop lying inside get warm.
Does my 16-inch MacBook Pro fit the Gustav Original?
No. The Original is designed for laptops up to 15 inches. For 16 and 17 inches you need the Original XL, which is 476 mm long.
Do I also need an external keyboard?
If you type for more than an hour at a stretch: yes. A raised laptop with its built-in keyboard forces the wrists upwards. That applies to every stand, whatever the material.
How do I care for oak veneer?
Wipe with a dry or slightly damp cloth. No abrasives, no wet mugs without a coaster. Small scratches after a few years are part of owning wood; they are signs of use, not defects.
