Sustainable Christmas Gifts for Employees: What Actually Gets Used (and the Tax Rules)
Mid-November, a Teams call with HR. "We need Christmas gifts for 80 people by Friday. The budget is signed off, the idea isn't." Someone suggests chocolate. Someone else suggests the branded thermos. Everyone knows both will be forgotten by January. If that sounds familiar, this guide will help you find a gift that is still on the desk in February, and explains what you need to watch for on the tax side.
What makes a good employee gift
Most Christmas gifts for employees fail on one of three counts: they are interchangeable (a voucher, sweets), they are really advertising (a mug, a pen), or they do not fit the person's working day. A gift that lands meets three criteria:
- It gets used daily. Anything that sits on the desk or travels in the work bag has the highest usage rate. Decorative objects have the lowest.
- It is better than what people would buy themselves. That is exactly what separates appreciation from a box-ticking exercise.
- Its sustainability is traceable. Not "green" in the marketing copy, but specific materials you can name in the accompanying note.
Three price bands compared
Up to €70: the small, everyday gift
In this band, things that go into the bag work best. The Echo Tech Pouch (€65) keeps charger, cables, earphones and pens in an accordion case that opens out into a small desk organiser. The fabric is REPREVE® recycled polyester made from PET bottles; the trim is vegan leather, also from recycled PET. The FlexMat desk mat (€49) in recycled felt rolls up and suits a shared desk as well as the kitchen table at home.
Up to €150: the desk-sharing companion
Anyone working in an office without assigned desks has a real problem: where does everything go? The Loop Desk Caddy (€109) is a lightweight organiser in thermoformed recycled PET felt with an oak-veneer centre section. It carries laptop, keyboard, notebook and small items from locker to desk. For rollouts it also comes as a box of eight (€697 instead of €872). The DeskMate Work Bag (€139) is the alternative for commuters: a bag that unfolds into an organiser on the desk.
From €245: the gift that stays
The Gustav Original (from €245) is a laptop stand and desk organiser in one, with oak veneer, powder-coated aluminium and a felt pinboard made from recycled PET. It is handmade in Greece by a family-run company and comes with a two-year warranty. At that price it is not a giveaway but an investment in ergonomics: the laptop comes up to eye level and the neck is grateful. It makes sense as a gift for senior staff, long-service anniversaries or small teams. For Christmas 2026 there is a Limited Edition in Brick, Mustard and Teal (€265, pre-order, shipping from around 20 November).
Tax: what applies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland
The key point first: in Germany, Christmas is not a personal occasion. The €60 rule for small attentions (birthdays, weddings, anniversaries) therefore does not apply to a Christmas gift. Three routes remain:
- The €50 monthly benefit-in-kind threshold. Tax- and social-security-free, but it is a threshold, not an allowance: if all benefits in kind in December exceed €50, the whole amount becomes taxable. An Echo at €65 does not fit here.
- A company event with the €110 allowance. If the gift is handed over at the Christmas party, it counts towards the €110 per person allowance (including food, drink and venue). A Loop at €109 will almost certainly break that limit.
- Flat-rate taxation under §37b EStG at 30%. The employer pays the tax and the gift stays net for the employee. This is the usual route for quality gifts above €100.
In Austria, gifts in kind of up to €186 per employee per year are free of tax and contributions, on top of €365 for company events, so a Loop or a DeskMate falls within the tax-free range. In Switzerland, gifts in kind of up to CHF 500 per year generally do not need to appear on the salary certificate. We are not tax advisers; check the details for your company with payroll, especially in mixed cases.
Which option suits you?
You are gifting 50 to 500 people and need something uniform: the Loop Desk Caddy in a team colour is the most pragmatic gift, especially if you have introduced or are planning desk sharing. The box of eight brings the unit price down noticeably.
Your team commutes between home and office: the Echo Tech Pouch is the gift that goes straight into the bag and stays there. Tax-free in Austria; in Germany best handled through flat-rate taxation.
You want a gift for a few people who have delivered a lot: the Gustav Original has the longest service life of anything in our range. Who it is not for: people with a 17-inch laptop (that is what the XL is for) or with a fixed desk and monitor arm who do not need a laptop stand.
Who our products are not the right choice for: if you have to stay under €20 per person, regional food or a charity voucher is more honest than a cheap gadget. And if you want gifts with a large printed logo, a promotional merchandise supplier will serve you better; our products are deliberately understated.
For companies: volumes, samples, framework agreements
From 25 units we offer volume pricing, samples before you order and, for larger rollouts, framework agreements or leasing. Companies such as Adidas, Roche, Sanofi and Verbund already use Gustav in their desk-sharing programmes. You will find the details and the enquiry form on our page for businesses. For Christmas 2026: orders placed by the end of November are realistic for delivery in DACH and Benelux before 20 December; the Limited Edition ships from around 20 November.
Frequently asked questions
Are Christmas gifts for employees tax-free?
In Germany only up to €50 per month (a threshold) or within the €110 for the Christmas party. Above that, 30% flat-rate taxation is the usual route. In Austria €186 per year is tax-free; in Switzerland gifts in kind up to CHF 500.
What is a sustainable Christmas gift for employees?
One that is used for a long time and made from traceable materials. For us that means recycled PET felt, REPREVE® fabric from bottles and oak veneer on lightweight plywood. Note: only our wooden products are made in Europe; the bags, pouches and mats are not.
How long does shipping take before Christmas?
Within the EU, Switzerland and Norway 2 to 7 working days, free from €130. For larger corporate orders we recommend ordering by the end of November.
Are there volume discounts?
Yes, from 25 units. The Loop is available directly in the shop as a box of eight; for everything else, an enquiry via the business page is worthwhile.
