Organising Cables in the Office: Is a Tech Pouch Worth It?

Monday morning, desk-sharing office. You find a free desk, open the laptop – and the hunt begins. The USB-C cable is somewhere at the bottom of your bag, the charger has tied itself to your earphones, and the monitor adapter is, as always, at home. Ten minutes gone before you have started. If that sounds familiar, a tech pouch is probably the cheapest improvement you can make to your working day. Here is what matters – and when you should save your money.

Why cables in the office turn into chaos so quickly

In the traditional private office, cable management was a fit-out job: routed once, never touched again. With desk sharing, home office and commuting between the two, it has become a daily problem. The cable you needed at yesterday's desk has to come with you today – and go back tomorrow. Loose cables in a laptop bag tangle, plugs scratch screens, and the one missing cable ends up costing you more time than all the others combined.

The solution is less a specific product than a principle: every cable has a fixed place, and that place travels with you. Whether a zip bag, an Amazon electronics organiser or a premium tech pouch does the job depends on how you work.

Three ways to organise cables

1. Zip bag or pencil case (€0–10)

A pencil case or a clear zip bag serves the basic purpose: everything is in one place. The drawbacks: cables still tangle, you cannot see at a glance what is missing, and chargers with sharp edges damage earphones or cable sheathing. For two cables and a plug, this is all you need.

2. Electronics organiser with mesh pockets (€10–25)

The typical Amazon organisers from brands such as UGREEN, tomtoc or Inateck offer mesh pockets, elastic loops and often an SD-card slot. They are practical and cheap. Their weaknesses show up with daily use: the mesh stretches, the nylon does not look the part in a meeting, and most are designed for travel, not for moving between desks.

3. Tech pouch with accordion opening (€50–80)

The higher-end category opens like a fan so you see every compartment at once instead of rummaging in a bag. Elastic bands in different sizes keep cables, earphones, mouse and power bank separate. Examples are the Peak Design Tech Pouch or our Echo Tech Pouch. The price is three to five times that of a mesh organiser. Whether it is worth it depends on how often you pick the pouch up.

What really matters in a tech pouch

  1. Visibility when opened. The most important criterion. If you cannot see immediately that the HDMI cable is missing, the best stitching in the world will not help you. An accordion design beats any flat pouch here.
  2. Loops in several sizes. A USB-C cable needs a narrow loop; a laptop power brick needs its own compartment. Organisers with a single loop size are a mess again within two weeks.
  3. External dimensions that fit your bag. The Echo measures 240 × 156 × 65 mm closed, so it fits a laptop bag, the DeskMate and the tray of a Gustav organiser. Measure before you buy.
  4. Material and edges. Recycled polyester such as REPREVE® is tough and water-repellent, but not waterproof. For rainy commutes without a rucksack, that is a real difference.
  5. A zipped pocket for small personal items. Adapters, a SIM tool, a spare memory card: small parts need a closed pocket or they disappear.

Which option suits you?

You need one charging cable and nothing else? Then do not buy a tech pouch. A five-euro pencil case is the honest answer, and we would rather not take €65 off you for something you do not need.

You change desks several times a week and carry five or more items? Then a tech pouch pays for itself over time. The Echo Tech Pouch (€65, Navy Blue or Light Grey) is made from REPREVE® fabric from recycled water bottles, has an expandable accordion design, loops for cables and earphones, larger holders for a mouse and power bank, a central compartment for the laptop charger and a zipped pocket. Pen loops and card slots are included. In the interest of honesty: unlike our wooden products, the Echo is not made in Europe. It is water-repellent, but it is not drop protection for sensitive hard drives.

You want to take the whole workspace with you, not just the cables? Then the pouch is only one building block. The DeskMate (€139) folds from laptop bag to upright organiser, and the Echo has its place inside. As a set, both come as DeskMate & Echo for €179, €25 less than bought separately. If you mostly stay at one desk and only move occasionally, the Loop Desk Caddy in recycled PET felt (€109) is the better fit.

For businesses: cables as part of the desk-sharing concept

In desk-sharing offices, the clean desk policy rarely fails because of paper. It fails because of chargers left on the desk. A personal tech pouch per employee solves the problem at the root: everyone has their own cables, nothing stays behind, nothing gets lost. How that fits into an overall concept is on our page on desk-sharing solutions for businesses, including volume pricing and co-branding with your company logo.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best way to organise cables in the office?

A fixed place per cable that travels with you. For a few items a pencil case is enough; if you change desks daily, a tech pouch with an accordion opening and loops in several sizes is worth it.

Is a €65 tech pouch worth it compared with a €15 organiser?

Only if you use it daily and care about visibility and material. For occasional travel, the cheap organiser is the more sensible choice.

Does a laptop charger fit in the Echo Tech Pouch?

Yes, the central compartment is intended for bulky items such as laptop chargers. The internal space is governed by the closed size of 240 × 156 × 65 mm; measure very large power bricks first.

Is the Echo Tech Pouch waterproof?

No. The REPREVE® fabric is water-repellent, but in heavy rain you should carry the pouch inside a bag.
