The world of work has been changed forever by Covid. Trust – for so long a barrier to more flexible ways of working – should no longer be an issue when it comes to designing a new, hybrid way of working. Employees will now move more freely between work and home, between meeting rooms and quiet spaces in the office.
As hybrid working becomes the new normal, so a new generation of tools that facilitate this approach will be required. On the technological side, there are of course the video conferencing platforms such as Zoom and Teams, and the collaborative tools such as Google Docs. What is activity based working?
Activity Based Working is a way of designing a workplace in order that it provides physical spaces appropriate for the range of tasks that employees might carry out. Typical examples of ABW spaces are quiet rooms for focused work, bookable meeting rooms, spaces such as breakout areas and café-style booths for more informal collaboration, and so on.
A key principle behind the ABW approach is to acknowledge the effect that space has on how we feel and how well we are able to work - a stark contrast to the more traditional fixed desk way of working.
